The Supreme Council for Environment (SCE), in cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and with technical support from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), is hosting a GCC sub-regional workshop on the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas and Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs).
The workshop brings together specialists in protected area management from GCC member states, government officials, representatives of academic institutions, private sector participants, and experts in environmental protection and biodiversity conservation.
Amna Hamad Al Rumaihi, Chief Executive of the SCE, said the workshop aims to strengthen environmental cooperation among GCC countries by promoting knowledge exchange, enhancing national and regional capacities, and encouraging the adoption of international standards and best practices in the management of protected areas.
She said the initiative supports ongoing efforts to improve the effectiveness of environmental programmes and projects aimed at conserving key ecosystems, protecting native species and their natural habitats, promoting sustainable resource management, and strengthening resilience to environmental challenges and climate change.
Al Rumaihi added that the workshop provides an important platform for GCC member states to share successful experiences and coordinate their approaches to developing protected area management policies. She noted that these efforts contribute to fulfilling regional and international environmental commitments, advancing global biodiversity targets and the Sustainable Development Goals, and ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources for future generations.
The programme includes scientific and practical sessions, along with specialised panel discussions focused on implementing the IUCN Green List standards and exchanging expertise to further strengthen biodiversity conservation and sustainable development efforts across the GCC.
