Cuba slowly gets power back after third nationwide blackout in six months

Havana: Cubans are gradually regaining electricity following a massive, nationwide power outage on Monday, marking the island’s third total blackout in six months. The energy collapse has left 9.6 million inhabitants in despair as the grid struggled to recover.

By Tuesday, state electricity company Union Electrica restored power to over 30 percent of the capital, Havana, prioritizing medical and water installations. However, officials noted that critical fuel shortages continue to heavily complicate the restoration process.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel blamed the crisis on a US fuel blockade initiated by President Donald Trump in January. The strict sanctions have drastically depleted oil supplies required to run Cuba's dilapidated, Soviet-era power plants.

The ongoing energy blockade has pushed the island closer to collapse, triggering severe shortages of food, drinking water, and medicine.
