Alaska: A civilian-contracted charter aircraft crashed near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site in western Alaska on Thursday, killing all eight people on board, the US military said.

The plane crashed at the airstrip serving the remote radar site, roughly 725 kilometres west of Anchorage. The plane had left Anchorage and was thought to have crashed while nearing the spot.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the plane was carrying two pilots and six passengers. Rescue teams eventually arrived at the crash site and determined there were no survivors.

The Cape Newenham facility is part of a network of distant radar installations that monitor aeroplanes operating in Alaskan airspace and near the state's borders. The military did not promptly share information on the passengers or the exact duties they did at the facility.

US Air Force Lt. Gen. Robert Davis called the tragedy as a heartbreaking loss, and stated that the military's top priority was to assist the victims' families, friends, and coworkers. Search and rescue teams were also lauded for their efforts.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash. The reason of the accident has yet to be identified.
