Work has begun on pouring the bridge decks for Phase Three (A) of the roads development project leading to Bahrain International Airport, with the project now 47 per cent complete, as per Ministry of Works.
Minister Eng. Ibrahim bin Hassan Al-Hawaj inspected the project and said it forms part of the government's efforts to improve the road network and ease traffic congestion in Muharraq.
The current phase includes the construction of a free-flow left-turn bridge on Khalifa Al Kabeer Street at its junction with Arad Street. The bridge is expected to improve traffic flow, reduce travel times and provide easier access to Bahrain International Airport.
The project also includes upgrades to sections of Arad Street and Khalifa Al Kabeer Street, improvements to the existing marine bridge on Arad Street, landscaping works and the installation of a modern rainwater drainage network.
The ministry said the upgraded intersection will be able to handle around 16,000 vehicles per hour after completion, up from its current capacity of about 5,250 vehicles per hour.
The first and second phases of the project have already been completed. These included widening Road 2403 opposite the new airport terminal to three lanes and constructing a service road.
