Free transport for elderly to hospital appointments proposed

Manama: For many elderly citizens, the journey to a hospital appointment can be as challenging as the illness itself. Long distances, limited transport options and the need to rely on family members often turn routine medical visits into a stressful experience.

Recognising these difficulties, a parliamentary proposal has called for introducing a free transportation service for senior citizens travelling to their medical appointments.

The proposal, which calls for providing organised transport for elderly patients during their scheduled hospital visits, is set to be discussed during the upcoming parliamentary session.

Supporters of the proposal say such a service would ease the daily burdens faced by many older Bahrainis who struggle to reach hospitals and health centres, particularly those who live alone or whose families cannot accompany them to every appointment.

Members noted that regular medical check-ups are essential for older patients with chronic conditions, yet transportation difficulties sometimes force them to postpone or miss appointments altogether.

Providing a dedicated transport service, they argued, would not only support elderly citizens but also ensure that patients receive timely treatment and follow-up care.

The proposal reflects a broader effort within Parliament to address the practical challenges faced by vulnerable groups in society, placing greater focus on policies that improve quality of life and access to essential services.

For many families, the initiative carries a simple but powerful message: growing older should not mean struggling alone to reach the care that keeps people healthy and safe.
