Long before alarm clocks and mobile phones, Bahrain’s Ramadan nights were guided by the steady beat of a drum and a familiar voice echoing through the narrow lanes of Manama. The mesahar, or traditional night caller, would walk from one neighbourhood to another, gently waking families for suhoor, the last meal before fasting begins at dawn.

His call was simple yet stirring. “O sleeper, remember God… O Heavy Head one, remember to drink water.” Children would hurry behind him, clutching small drums and repeating his chants with excitement. For many, these moments were about more than just preparing a meal; they were about sharing a collective experience that strengthened ties between neighbours.

In the final days of Ramadan, the bond between the mesahar and residents grew even stronger. He would visit homes to receive gestures of appreciation, and on the morning of Eid families offered gifts in gratitude for his dedication throughout the holy month.

Although modern technology has reduced the practical need for his service, the mesahar remains a cherished symbol of Bahrain’s Ramadan identity. Today, he appears in heritage events and cultural gatherings across Manama, reminding younger generations that beyond convenience lies a tradition rooted in faith, warmth and togetherness.
