Serious concerns over the condition of a sewage treatment station in Hamad Town were raised during the Northern Municipal Council’s Ordinary Session 11, as members warned that recurring faults are placing residents at risk and can no longer be treated as routine technical issues. Abdullah Al Thawadi led the discussion, stressing that the problem has moved beyond isolated malfunctions and now reflects structural strain on the facility.

Reality

Council members were informed that repeated breakdowns in the main pumps have become almost daily, resulting in the emission of unpleasant odours and occasional backflow affecting nearby homes. According to Al Thawadi, field visits confirmed that the station is operating under pressure far beyond its original capacity, particularly due to rapid urban expansion and population growth in surrounding areas.

Impact

Members noted that the ageing station is no longer capable of absorbing increased loads, despite the presence of relatively modern equipment. Faults in the primary pump were described as the most critical issue, triggering wider system failures and forcing emergency interventions to prevent service disruption. Residents, councillors said, have lodged multiple complaints over health, environmental impact and quality of life.

Responsibility

The council agreed that continued reliance on short term maintenance is insufficient. Al Thawadi emphasised that delays in comprehensive upgrades could expose authorities to greater environmental and public health consequences, particularly during peak usage periods or heavy rainfall.

Recommendation

A formal recommendation was approved to urge the Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture to proceed with a full development and upgrade of the sewage station. Members stressed that decisive action is needed to ensure operational stability, protect residents and align infrastructure capacity with ongoing urban growth in Hamad Town.
