For 21-year-old Ajina Raj, a lifelong dream took flight, literally, when she visited Bahrain, captivating everyone with her extraordinary story of courage, talent, and determination. Born with special needs and taking her first steps only after turning four, Ajina has defied every obstacle in her path. Trained in the classical Indian dance forms of Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam, she has earned numerous accolades, including the prestigious Best Creative Child 2025 award from the Chief Minister of Kerala in the specially-abled category, among many others recognizing her exceptional talent.

One of Ajina’s two lifelong dreams, flying and traveling to the Gulf, came true during this visit. Her mother told The Daily Tribune that back home, which was near the airport, little Ajina would spend hours watching planes soar overhead, dreaming of the day she could board one herself. That dream became a reality as she took to the skies and travelled to Bahrain. Now, as she continues to soar higher, 30,000 feet and beyond, her journey of inspiration reaches far and wide.

Her mother fondly recalls the earliest signs of Ajina’s talent: having just started to walk, she would sway, twirl, and respond instinctively to the nearby temple music drifting through the early sunset hours, completely lost in its rhythm. One can’t help but marvel at how effortlessly her gift revealed itself and a reminder that sometimes, brilliance emerges in the simplest of moments.

Visit

Ajina’s visit to Bahrain was initiated by Inspire, a Kerala-based organization dedicated to empowering differently-abled individuals. Inspire supports its members in running small-scale businesses, such as paper bag manufacturing, with 85% of participants being differently-abled, giving them both purpose and independence. The visit was further facilitated by the Bahrain Province of the World Malayalee Council, which recently hosted Keraleeyam 26, where Ajina captivated the audience with a mesmerizing Mohiniyattam performance.

Emphasizing the importance of inclusion through opportunity, Mr. Unni Puthoor, Founder of Inspire, noted that when differently-abled individuals are encouraged to pursue skills they are naturally good at, their potential flourishes. “What they need are opportunities suited to their abilities,”.

Ajina’s visit concluded at Sneha Recreation Centre, a flagship initiative launched in 1987 by the Indian Ladies Association Bahrain, which offers a nurturing space for children with special needs. Guided by 25 devoted volunteers, Sneha helps uncover the hidden talents of differently gifted children. Ajina’s presence filled the centre with joy and hope, gently reminding everyone that with love and opportunity, these super-talented individuals can truly shine.

As she continues to soar even higher in life, Ajina’s next goal is to meet her favourite Indian super star Mohanlal. Her story is a shining testament to resilience, talent, and the power of dreams. It reminds us that with determination, passion, and the right opportunities, even the most extraordinary challenges can be transformed into remarkable achievements.
