Private educational institutions in Bahrain will have one year to regularise their status once a new law governing the sector comes into effect, following its ratification by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa yesterday.

Law (4) of 2026, issuing the Law on Private Educational Institutions, was ratified and promulgated after receiving approval from both the Shura Council and the Council of Representatives.

The law will come into force from the day following its publication in the Official Gazette.

Under its provisions, private educational institutions that are operating at the time the law enters into force must align their status with the new requirements within one year from the date of implementation.

The Minister of Education has been tasked with issuing the executive regulations and decisions necessary to implement the law.

Existing decisions related to private educational institutions will remain in effect, provided they do not conflict with the new law, until the required implementing regulations are issued.

The law also repeals provisions related to private educational institutions contained in Decree-Law (25) of 1998 on Private Educational and Training Institutions, as well as any other provisions that conflict with the new legislation.

For matters not specifically addressed in the new law, the provisions of the Education Law (27) of 2005 will continue to apply, as long as they do not conflict with the new framework.

he Prime Minister and the ministers, each within their respective responsibilities, will oversee the implementation of the law once it comes into effect.
