The High Criminal Court has set October 12 to hear an appeal filed by a defendant sentenced to life imprisonment in a major drug trafficking case, in order to assign a defense lawyer to represent him.
Earlier, the court had convicted four defendants of drug trafficking, sentencing each to life imprisonment and imposing a BD5,000 fine.
Two other defendants received 10-year prison sentences and the same fine, while a female Arab national was sentenced to one year in prison and fined BD1,000 for drug use.
The court also ordered her deportation upon completion of her sentence and confiscation of all seized narcotics.
The case began after the Anti-Narcotics Department at the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science received intelligence about an international network smuggling drugs into Bahrain through its territorial waters.
The first and second defendants were responsible for collecting shipments of hashish.
