Typhoon Dujuan Leaves 2 Dead, 46,000 Homes Without Power in Japan

Tokyo: Typhoon Dujuan swept over eastern Japan, killing at least two people and leaving more than 46,000 households without power, while torrential rain caused flooding and landslides in the Tokyo region.

According to Japanese officials and public broadcaster NHK, one person was murdered in Kanagawa prefecture and another in Chiba, while rescue teams continued to hunt for four individuals who had been reported missing after landslides.

The storm dropped record rainfall to various regions. Oshima on the Izu Islands received 832 mm of rain in 48 hours, more than twice the usual rainfall for the month of September. Tokyo's Edogawa ward also received a record 282.5 millimetres of rain in 24 hours.

More than 46,000 Chiba households remained without power on Tuesday morning. The inclement weather also hampered transportation, with Japan Airlines cancelling 135 flights and All Nippon Airways cancelling 140. 

Dujuan has already weakened and moved northeast into the Pacific, allowing officials to lift or reduce multiple heavy rain and landslide advisories. However, officials continued to advise caution because the saturated ground remained prone to more landslides and flooding.
