Trump praises Mamdani after meeting in New York

Manhattan, New York: President Donald Trump heaped praise on New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a closed-door meeting in Manhattan on Monday, setting aside past political differences to discuss local safety and housing.

Having previously criticized Mamdani as ‘my little communist’ before he took office in January, Trump struck a surprisingly warm tone. At a joint news conference, Trump told the 34-year-old mayor that he was off to a strong start and hoped he would be a great leader.

During their hour-long discussion marking their third public meeting since the mayoral election, the leaders tackled several high-stakes policy topics. 

Mamdani voiced strong opinions on keeping New Yorkers safe regarding federal rollbacks of Temporary Protected Status for thousands of immigrants. They also reviewed a 12,000-home building proposal requiring an estimated $21 billion in federal funding.

While acknowledging profound political disagreements, Mamdani emphasized his ongoing commitment to collaborate with anyone who can deliver relief to the city.

The joint appearance also took place as Mamdani ensured all media outlets were welcome to cover their press conference.
