Bahrain Appoints Dr. Maha Saleh Al Shehab as Child Rights Commissioner
The Board of Commissioners has approved the appointment of Dr. Maha Saleh Al Shehab as the new Child Rights Commissioner, succeeding Dr. Horiah Al Dairi, a former board member. The decision comes as part of the board’s ongoing efforts to establish a dedicated role focused on addressing children’s issues, protecting their rights, and promoting their best interests. Dr. Al Shehab will continue her current role as a full-time member of the Board of Commissioners while taking on this new responsibility.
On the occasion, Eng. Ali Ahmed Al-Darazi, Chairman of the National Institution for Human Rights, said: “Dr. Maha’s appointment underscores the institution’s commitment to child rights and its dedication to strengthening the position of children in society. Her experience and expertise make her well-suited to play a central role in monitoring children’s rights and proposing initiatives and recommendations that ensure their best interests are achieved.”
The National Institution for Human Rights established the position of Child Rights Commissioner in June 2023 to focus on protecting and promoting children’s rights, supporting related policies, and creating a safe and supportive environment for children. This role falls within the institution’s broader mandate to monitor and oversee all human rights issues, including those affecting children.
