Nine people have been hospitalized, and dozens more have fallen ill with salmonella after an outbreak connected to certain pistachio brands and pistachio-containing products.
Health officials have issued recall warnings for some items from the brands Habibi, Al Mokhtar Food Centre, and Dubai.
According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, 52 cases of salmonella infection have been confirmed across four provinces between early March and mid-July. Quebec has been hit hardest with 39 cases, followed by Ontario with nine, British Columbia with three, and Manitoba with one.
The recalled products were mainly distributed in Ontario and Quebec.
Among the recalled items is a popular product called the Dubai brand Pistachio & Knafeh Milk Chocolate. This chocolate bar, filled with pistachio cream and crunchy knafeh pieces, became famous online after receiving glowing reviews on social media and food blogs. It is sold in Quebec and is also available for purchase online.
Consumers are urged to check their homes and avoid eating these products until the recall is lifted.
