A shopkeeper has been fined BD2,200 and had his stock confiscated after a court found he had tampered with pesticide and fertiliser containers, repackaging them without authorisation, and selling expired chemicals without a licence.

The Minor Criminal Court issued the sentence after hearing that the man, who owns a commercial outlet, had imported pesticides and fertilisers without the required clearance and intended to put out-of-date products on the shelves.

The case began when the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture filed a report with the Public Prosecution.

Inspectors had uncovered a batch of agricultural supplies brought in without approval, along with expired pest control products stored for sale.

Prosecutors questioned the judicial officers involved in the raid and summoned the shop owner for interview.

He admitted the offences and was referred to court, which handed down the fine and ordered the confiscation of the goods.

The Chief of the Ministries and Public Bodies Prosecution reminded businesses of the rules surrounding chemical products, warning that unauthorised handling of dangerous substances puts the environment and public health at risk.
