A chemical-strewn waste dump has been found on open ground beside homes in Al Maqsha, drawing concern from residents and leading to a site visit by council members and public bodies.

Dr Sayed Shubber Ibrahim Al Wadaei, Chairman of the Northern Municipal Council, said the dump contained barrels of chemical material, as well as building scraps and household rubbish. He warned that the mix posed environmental and social risks to those living nearby.

The inspection was carried out after the council received complaints from residents.

Visit

Joining the visit were representatives from the Northern Area Municipality, the Supreme Council for Environment, the Ministry of Health, the Northern Governorate Police, the Jaafari Waqf Directorate, cleaning contractor Urbaser Bahrain, and Al Maqsha Matam.

The group examined the types of waste and assessed what dangers they might pose to public safety and cleanliness.

Some open structures at the site were singled out as a concern, with Dr Al Wadaei warning they could attract criminal activity.

The council agreed on a course of action.

The Supreme Council for Environment will examine the chemical barrels and decide how they should be handled under the environmental law.

The municipality has been tasked with clearing the area and removing makeshift structures Meanwhile, the Jaafari Waqf Directorate, working alongside the council and the local executive body, will help put up a boundary around the land.
