Bahrain is building a vast food production hub, known as ‘Food City’, in a move to secure supplies and keep prices stable.
MP Jalal Kadhem said the project, ordered by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and directly assigned to His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, aims to reduce the country’s dependence on imported goods.
Covering a million square metres, the site will serve as a centre for producing, packaging and distributing food, with infrastructure designed to meet international standards, according to those behind the scheme.
The aim, said Kadhem, is to revive the local food sector, attract serious investment and strengthen cooperation between public bodies and private firms.
Food supply
He described the project as a clear step towards making food supply more reliable.
While full self-sufficiency may not be within immediate reach, efforts like this, he said, could reduce reliance on foreign imports and help establish domestic supply chains.
Kadhem welcomed the royal support for the initiative and said it fits into a broader push to develop Bahrain’s productive sectors.
He urged both government departments and private enterprises to work together to ensure the project succeeds, calling it a central part of the country’s food security plans.
He added that Bahrain needs a clear strategy for this sector, and that the new site should play a leading role in meeting the food needs of the population and supporting economic stability in the long run.
