Sitra’s central market is set for a six-month redevelopment starting in August, following a tender issued this month for the first stage of a two-part rebuild.

The Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture gave its reply to MP Mohsen Al Asbool, who had raised a written question in Parliament.

The works will take place within the bounds of the existing market.

Plan

The plan includes larger spaces for stallholders, air-conditioning for the meat section, and modern safety features.

There will be new security cameras, shaded parking, and room for more cars. The water and sewage systems are to be reinforced, and the roads round the market resurfaced.

The first stage went to tender on 4 May.

Construction is expected to start three months later and run for half a year.

New trade

The project also includes a new trade and service block covering 4,358 square metres.

It is meant to serve both the local population and visitors, with demand rising in the wake of the East Sitra housing scheme.

Al Asbool said the plans tie in with the government’s aim to meet public needs and keep pace with growth.
