The Public Prosecution Office has announced in a statement the arrest of four Indian nationals for engaging in illegal fishing activities in Bahraini waters.
The individuals were apprehended by the Coast Guard after they were found using prohibited bottom trawling nets, commonly known as "kofa," and attempting to flee from authorities.
"The Coast Guard received a report of a suspicious vessel carrying four individuals of Indian nationality.
Upon investigation, they discovered the vessel was using illegal fishing methods and attempted to evade the Coast Guard patrol. The individuals were apprehended and found in possession of approximately 40 kilograms of fresh shrimp," the statement explained, adding: "An inspection of the vessel revealed a complete lack of safety equipment, including life jackets, a first aid kit, and a fire extinguisher."
"The Public Prosecution Office initiated an investigation and interrogated the suspects, who confessed to using illegal fishing nets, failing to operate navigational lights to prevent collisions, sailing without a license, obstructing security personnel from inspection, and neglecting to provide safety equipment," the statement pointed out.
The Public Prosecution Office stated that it ordered the suspects to be detained pending further investigation.
"Authorities are also seeking to apprehend additional individuals who may have been involved in the crime. The vessel has been impounded as part of the ongoing investigation.
"The Public Prosecution Office has instructed security authorities to intensify their search and investigation efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects and bring them to justice," the statement concluded.
