Dozens of people were isolated on board a ship in the Nile due to Corona

Dozens of Egyptian tourists and crew members continued to be isolated on the "A Sarah" cruise ship that docked in the Nile off the city of Luxor (south), after 45 people were confirmed to have been infected with the new Corona virus, according to passengers told AFP.

"There are close to 80 people on the ship, including passengers and crew, who will continue to be isolated for 14 days," said a passenger, Philippe Gruy, 54, who is among a group of French tourists on board.

Gheroye told France Press by phone that his 53-year-old wife had been transferred to a hospital in Marsa Matruh in northern Egypt, where all those who tested positive for HIV would be isolated.

33 passengers and 12 crew members on board the ship were evacuated during the weekend, after tests showed they had developed corona.

The ship was carrying a hundred foreign tourists and 70 Egyptians are the crew, according to the Egyptian authorities.

Gheroye confirmed that the ship had been removed from the marina on Friday, while tourists should have visited a synagogue in Luxor and medical tests were carried out for the passengers.

"We did not receive explanations at the beginning about the reason for the expulsion of the ship," he said, explaining that he was unable to contact his isolated wife in the hospital.

"We are afraid," he said. "People would have preferred to be isolated in their homes."

According to Ghruway, about 30 French people are on board the ship, while about 15 have been taken to hospital.

It was not possible to obtain confirmation from any French diplomatic source on Monday morning.

Another French tourist on board the ship, Luca Ponami, wrote a distress message on Facebook on Saturday, complaining about the conditions for the isolation of the passengers, including Americans and Indians.

On Monday, Poonami confirmed to AFP that he was still on board and had received "no message or phone call."

"We are in contact with the American passengers on the ship," US embassy spokesman Sam Verberg told France Press, but he did not specify how many.

On Sunday evening, the Indian Embassy in Cairo confirmed via Twitter the presence of Indian citizens on the ship.

On Sunday, the Egyptian Ministry of Health announced the first death of the new Corona virus in Africa, pointing out that a German tourist died in the Red Sea city of Hurghada.
