Traffic fine only if vehicles cross 10pc speed limit

ManamaOver-speeding drivers will only be fined if they cross 10 per cent of the street’s speed limit, the General Directorate of Traffic clarified yesterday.

Clearing all the confusions that recently emerged with regard to over-speeding fines, the directorate said yesterday that traffic fines would be imposed only if vehicles cross the speed limit by 10 per cent, in which such rules cover all roads and junctions.

This means that only drivers who cross the speed of 88km/h on roads of an 80km/h speed limit, or 110km/h on roads of a 100km/h speed limit, will be fined by  traffic police,  recorded on smart traffic monitoring cameras. The directorate’s statement has put an end to the confusion recently created with regard to the speeds that drivers will be fined for.

A parliamentarian had demanded the directorate for clarification during a general discussion held at the House of Representatives on traffic issues on February 28, saying, “Why some traffic control cameras take pictures of cars that cross the speed limit by one per cent while on other roads cameras will only snap pictures of cars that cross 30 per cent.”

The answer to the MP’s question came from the General Director of Traffic Colonel Shaikh Abdulrahman bin Abdulwahab Al Khalifa, who clarified in a statement that “crossing the speed limit by one per cent is considered an offence”.

DT News reported on Thursday that the Head of Accidents and Violations at the Directorate Captain Ahmed Al Saadi confirmed that cameras installed on traffic signals also take pictures of speeding vehicles, even if the signal was green.

Captain Al Saadi’s statements came after several reports appeared in different local media platforms, claiming that drivers aren’t aware of over-speeding fining mechanisms and that drivers are taken by surprise when it comes to over-speeding offences.

The General Directorate of Traffic has called upon drivers to stick to speed limits for the safety of road users, highlighting that traffic regulations have been enforced for the safety of all.
