Tonj North: According to a local authority, armed gunmen carried out a cattle raid in Tonj North County, Warrap State, killing at least 49 persons and injuring another 33.
The attackers apparently targeted cattle camps and adjacent settlements, adding to a history of fatal incursions in the area. Cattle raids, which are frequently tied to disputes over cattle, land, and resources, have long fuelled intercommunal conflict in South Sudan.
The recent bloodshed comes amid ongoing concerns about insecurity in Warrap, where officials have unable to break the cycle of livestock theft and retaliatory attacks.
