Israeli and Lebanese Forces Face Off in South Lebanon After Israeli Advance

Israeli and Lebanese forces faced off in a village in southern Lebanon on Friday after Israeli troops advanced into the area, according to an AFP photographer and other media reports from the scene.

The Israeli military moved forward after deploying tanks and detonating stun grenades near a position held by the Lebanese army, bringing the two sides into a tense confrontation.

Israel has maintained control over parts of southern Lebanon since fighting broke out in March with Hezbollah, the Lebanese armed group. Under a framework agreement between the two countries, however, the Lebanese army is expected to gradually assume control of the area.

The agreement calls for Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran, to disarm and for Israeli forces to withdraw from Lebanese territory.

Implementation of the agreement has progressed slowly, with Israel maintaining that it will continue to hold its positions while it considers Hezbollah a security threat.

The latest confrontation highlights the continuing tensions in southern Lebanon as both sides face pressure to implement the terms of the agreement and restore security along the border.
