Ex-Mexico Governor Arrested in Decade-Old Student Disappearance Case

Mexico City: Former Guerrero governor Ángel Aguirre is arrested for allegedly concealing evidence in the 2014 disappearance of 43 students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers' College, according to Mexican authorities.
Aguirre, who was governor at the time the students went missing, is accused of obstructing justice and forced disappearance. Prosecutors allege he ordered the destruction of security footage that could have shed light on the students' fate and police activities during the incident.
The 43 trainee instructors went missing in September 2014 after police seized their buses in Iguala, Guerrero. Investigations linked the tragedy to local police and organised crime, while suspicions of broader state participation have raised the case to the status of Mexico's most notorious human-rights violations.
More than a decade later, the fates of the majority of students remain unknown. Only three students have been positively identified using remains, and their families continue to demand answers and accountability. Aguirre previously denied wrongdoing.
