Harry Potter publisher to receive multimillion-dollar payout in Anthropic AI copyright settlement

Washington DC: Bloomsbury, the British publisher behind the Harry Potter series, will receive approximately $19 million following the approval of a historic $1.5 billion copyright settlement with AI developer Anthropic.

 Approved by a US District Court, the agreement resolves a major class-action lawsuit brought by authors and publishers over the unauthorized use of protected books to train its Claude language models.

Copyright has become a major battleground in the AI boom because tools such as Anthropic’s suite of Claude chatbots are trained on vast amounts of data taken from the open web, including copyright-protected work such as novels and news articles. 

Bloomsbury confirmed that 14,087 of its titles qualify under the agreement, yielding roughly $3,000 per title before legal costs, with net proceeds shared equally between the publisher and authors.

Although the settlement does not require Anthropic to admit legal wrongdoing, it marks one of the clearest financial consequences yet for AI companies accused of using copyrighted material without permission. 

Anthropic and other US-based AI companies continue to maintain that using web data to train AI models is permitted under the legal doctrine of fair use, which allows the use of copyrighted work without the owner’s permission in certain circumstances.
