Body of Indian Sailor Missing After Oman Ship Attack Found

A 30-year-old Indian sailor who went missing following an attack on the commercial vessel MV GFS Galaxy off the coast of Oman has died, the Indian Consulate in Dubai confirmed on Wednesday. The missing national, identified as third engineer Herambh Karmarkar from Pune, was aboard the Cypriot-flagged cargo ship when it was targeted on Sunday, July 12, 2026.
The assault left one Indian crew member missing while ten other Indian nationals on board were successfully rescued. According to Karmarkar's father-in-law, Vivek Tandon, the family was notified by the shipping company on Tuesday that the Omani coast guard had recovered his body, approximately 60 hours after the initial report of his disappearance. Karmarkar had been serving on the vessel for five months and was due to sign off shortly. A graduate in marine engineering from the City of Glasgow College in the UK, he is survived by his wife, mother, and younger sister.
In a statement posted on X, the Indian mission expressed its deepest condolences over the tragic demise and stated that officials are closely coordinating with UAE authorities and the shipping company to extend all possible support and assistance to the bereaved family. The family is currently awaiting the repatriation of his mortal remains, which are presently with the Oman Navy. Meanwhile, India has strongly condemned the attack on the commercial vessel and issued a firm call for an immediate de-escalation of maritime tensions in the region.
