Eighteen-year-old Emirati mountaineer Fatima Al Awadhi has begun her latest expedition, setting out to climb Lenin Peak in Kyrgyzstan as she continues her quest to conquer the Seven Summits and eventually complete the prestigious Explorer's Grand Slam.
Already recognised as the youngest Arab to summit Mount Vinson and Carstensz Pyramid, and the youngest Emirati to conquer Mount Elbrus, Fatima is steadily building an impressive list of achievements in global mountaineering despite her young age.
Lenin Peak, rising 7,134 metres above sea level in the Pamir Mountains, will be the highest mountain she has attempted so far. The expedition is being undertaken under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates.
The Explorer's Grand Slam is regarded as one of the world's toughest endurance challenges, requiring climbers to summit the highest mountain on each of the seven continents and ski to both the North and South Poles.
Fatima's journey into mountaineering began during a difficult period in high school while her father was in a coma. Seeking a way to cope with the emotional challenges, she joined the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award programme, where a trek through Nepal's Kathmandu Valley sparked her passion for climbing. Around a campfire in the Himalayas, she set herself the ambitious goal of completing the Seven Summits before turning 20.
Her first major achievement came with the successful ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, followed by Mount Elbrus in Europe, where she became the youngest Emirati to reach the summit. She later added Mount Vinson in Antarctica and Carstensz Pyramid in Oceania to her growing list of accomplishments.
Alongside her demanding expeditions, Fatima is pursuing a full-time degree in Economics, balancing intensive physical training, technical preparation, travel, and recovery with her university studies.
Having completed her first 5,000-metre mountaineering expedition in July 2025, Fatima is now attempting a 7,000-metre peak just one year later, with four of the Seven Summits already achieved.
Looking ahead, she hopes to break regional records and plans to attempt a double summit of Mount Everest and Lhotse within 24 hours as she continues her pursuit of one of mountaineering's greatest achievements.
