Santiago: An off-duty naval petty officer struck and killed six people at a street festival in Vina del Mar, Chile, on Sunday. Police confirmed that seven others sustained injuries in the crash, though their lives are not considered to be in danger.

Authorities believe the driver lost control of his vehicle while speeding on a road running alongside the festival site. Preliminary reports suggest that rain on the road caused the accident rather than alcohol consumption, though the driver is being detained for mandatory testing.

Most of the victims were merchants working at the fair. Photographs from the scene revealed the extent of the damage, showing a white car with a shattered windshield surrounded by discarded merchandise and debris.

President Jose Antonio Kast expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. He stated that the horrific tragedy has plunged the entire country into mourning.
