Seoul: A South Korean court sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to two years in prison on Monday after he was found guilty of illegally receiving free opinion polling services in violation of the country's political fundraising regulations.

The Seoul Central District Court concluded that Yoon obtained opinion polling services worth around 270 million won (roughly $180,000) from political broker Myung Tae-kyun without payment. Prosecutors claimed the free polls were offered in exchange for political favours, such as influence on a lawmaker's nomination.

Yoon denied any wrongdoing, claiming he never requested the surveys or promised political favours in exchange. His legal team is expected to challenge the verdict. The judgement adds to a number of judicial setbacks for the former president, who is already serving prison terms in other trials stemming from his failed 2024 martial law declaration and other abuses of power.
