EU tells Meta to change Facebook, Instagram's 'addictive design

Brussels: The EU warned Meta on Friday to change Facebook and Instagram's ‘addictive design’ or face heavy fines. The Commission stated these platforms currently break EU content rules regarding essential user protection.
Main concerns center on specific features like infinite scroll, autoplay, and personalized feeds designed to maximize engagement. The EU argues these tools fail to shield children and vulnerable adults from compulsive platform use.
If these views are confirmed, Meta faces fines of up to six percent of its annual worldwide turnover under the Digital Services Act. Brussels clarified that it prefers commitments over punishment to drive change.
Meta disagrees with the findings but pledged to continue engaging with the EU, pointing to its existing ‘Teen Accounts’ protections to safeguard young users.
