One million women and girls lose access to support amid aid cuts: UN

Geneva: The United Nations reported Friday that at least one million women and girls lost access to critical support due to significant foreign aid cuts since January 2025. This collapse occurs as humanitarian needs reach unprecedented levels globally.

Foreign aid spending was slashed by US President Donald Trump last year, leading other donors to tighten budgets. Consequently, 84 percent of women-led organizations face surging demand, yet nine in ten can no longer meet these needs.

The situation is dire, with 40 percent of surveyed groups fearing closure within the year. Meanwhile, cases of conflict-related sexual violence doubled in 2025.

Funding shortfalls fuel a broader backlash against women’s rights. Organizations report increased poverty, rising school dropouts, and more forced marriages, signaling a devastating societal toll.
