Toronto: Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen is retiring from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) this September to pursue new professional opportunities, officials announced Monday.

The 50-year-old made history earlier this year as part of the groundbreaking Artemis II crew, becoming the first Canadian to venture to the dark side of the Moon.

Hansen’s lunar mission, alongside Americans Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch, and Victor Glover, traveled further into deep space than any human flight before it.

The widely celebrated voyage re-ignited global fascination with space exploration, capturing thousands of stunning photographs. Both Prime Minister Mark Carney and the CSA praised Hansen for elevating Canada's role in global human space exploration.

While leaving his active spaceflight role, Hansen will remain a reservist in the Royal Canadian Air Force. In a statement, he emphasized his ongoing commitment to ensuring space leadership continues to lift the global community.
