New Delhi: At least six people, including five children, were killed after a dilapidated residential building collapsed in Mumbai as torrential monsoon rains battered India's financial capital, authorities said on Sunday.
The building in eastern Mumbai collapsed on Saturday, trapping residents beneath the debris, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde said. Rescue teams recovered the bodies as operations continued at the site.
The tragedy came as heavy rainfall brought large parts of the city to a standstill. The India Meteorological Department recorded more than 200 millimetres of rain within 24 hours and issued a red alert for Mumbai, warning of continued heavy showers and strong winds.
Flooded roads, traffic disruptions and waterlogging prompted authorities to declare a holiday for all schools and colleges on Sunday.
Mayor Tawde urged residents to remain indoors where possible, warning of the risk of falling trees and branches due to strong winds.
The annual monsoon is vital for India's agriculture and economy, but increasingly erratic weather linked to climate change has intensified extreme rainfall events. Authorities have also warned that the 2026 El Niño weather pattern could affect rainfall distribution across the country.
The heavy rains follow weeks of extreme heat in Mumbai, where officials had imposed water-use restrictions in June amid concerns over shrinking water supplies and rising demand.
