East Rutherford, New Jersey: Norway shocked five-time champions Brazil with a 2-1 victory in the World Cup last 16 on Sunday, a defeat that prompted Brazil star Neymar to suggest his international career may be over.

Erling Haaland scored twice to send Norway into the quarter-finals, while Neymar, who came on as a late substitute, scored a penalty deep into stoppage time for Brazil's only goal.

After the final whistle, the 34 year old Brazil forward broke down in tears and was consoled by teammates. Speaking briefly to Brazilian media, Neymar appeared to indicate that he had played his final match for the national team.

"I tried and I tried. Now it's over. It began here and it ends here," said Neymar, whose first goal for Brazil also came at MetLife Stadium during a match against the United States in 2010.

Brazil's all-time leading scorer had returned to the national team for the World Cup after a lengthy absence caused by injuries. The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star, who now plays for Santos, had made only one appearance at the tournament before Sunday's defeat.

The result marks one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, with Norway eliminating Brazil to reach the last eight.
