New York: A United Nations contracted truck transporting humanitarian goods was destroyed in a drone strike in Sudan, leading to the loss of 50 metric tonnes of essential supplies intended for the affected population, the UN said Thursday.
The vehicle was carrying crucial relief supplies including as blankets, kitchen sets, sleeping mats, plastic sheets, jerry cans, and solar lamps when it was attacked at Tendelti in White Nile state. The driver escaped unharmed, but the entire cargo was destroyed.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric criticised the bombing, saying it deprived thousands of vulnerable people in South Kordofan of critical aid. He underlined the United Nations' request for all parties to Sudan's conflict to follow international humanitarian law and ensure the safe passage of aid workers and relief supplies.
The attack comes as Sudan is facing one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with millions of people displaced and in desperate need of food, housing, and medical care. The UN cautioned that ongoing attacks on humanitarian activities risk worsening situations for populations already caught up in the conflict.
