Quetta: At least 40 people were killed Friday when a passenger bus veered off a mountain road and fell into a deep ravine in western Pakistan.
The vehicle plunged 70 to 80 feet into a rocky abyss in the rugged Dana Sar area while traveling from Quetta to Peshawar, leaving 11 passengers injured.
The vehicle became heavily overloaded after stopping to pick up travelers stranded by a separate broken-down bus along the highway.
The rugged mountainous border terrain caused severe difficulties for emergency response teams during the initial phase of the rescue operation, and three survivors remain in critical condition.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed profound grief over the tragedy, while the Balochistan Chief Minister ordered a formal inquiry into the fatal crash
