Paris: Nearly 3,000 people have been evacuated from southern France as raging wildfires, fuelled by high winds and the aftermath of a record-breaking heatwave, spread across various regions.

The most severely affected localities are Sainte-Marie-la-Mer and Canet-en-Roussillon, where residents and visitors were forced to flee. Approximately half of people evacuated remained in campgrounds, as firefighters used water-bombing aircraft and helicopters to combat the fires.

Authorities said at least 1,200 firemen had been dispatched, with big fires also blazing in the Aude and Hérault regions near the Spanish border. More than 1,200 hectares of land were burnt in a single day, as hot, dry, and windy weather fuelled the fires.

Several persons were injured, including firefighters, and emergency crews worked to protect houses, campers, and industrial sites. Officials have cautioned that fire conditions remain extremely risky, with another spell of high temperatures predicted for next week.
