Washington DC: The United States is burying a 900-pound stainless steel time capsule on July 4, 2026, to mark its 250th birthday. Placed near Independence Hall in Philadelphia, this historic vessel is strictly engineered to remain sealed for exactly 250 years, with a scheduled opening in the year 2276.

The time capsule acts as a collective snapshot of the nation, boasting unique artifacts contributed by all 50 states and five US territories.

Notable treasures range from profound historical relics such as a Union troop bald eagle feather from the Civil War and a piece of fabric from the Wright brothers' 1903 airplane to modern sports memorabilia like a 2025 basketball championship pin.

To capture the essence of contemporary 21st-century life, the vault also protects modern tech staples, including a late-model orange iPhone. In a nod to the future, it even features a digital prediction generated by an AI chatbot mapping out what California will look like two and a half centuries from now.

Engineering the capsule required meticulous planning to ensure everything survives the subterranean elements until 2276. Mechanical engineers selected a seamless cylinder design sealed with a soft metal called indium, housing it inside an outer metallic bell to lock out moisture.

Perishable items, such as a traditional leather American football, were intentionally rejected out of fear they would rot over time.

This project builds on a long-standing American tradition of utilizing temporal vaults during major historical milestones. The United States has successfully executed this before; a capsule buried in 1876 was opened during the 1976 bicentennial, and another historical cache from 1976 is currently resting in the National Archives, waiting to be opened in 2076.
