Yangon: According to a conflict monitoring group, the dead toll in Myanmar's civil war has topped 100,000 since the military seized power in a coup in 2021, emphasising the destructive impact of more than four years of conflict.
The crisis began when the military deposed the elected government in February 2021, sparking countrywide protests that eventually turned into an armed resistance comprising pro-democracy groups and ethnic armed groupings.
The war has spread over most of the country, displacing millions and worsening Myanmar's humanitarian situation. Airstrikes, artillery bombardment, and battles have persisted despite repeated international calls for peace.
Analysts say the disappointing milestone shows the magnitude of the conflict and the hurdles that efforts to end the violence face, with no political solution in sight.
