Bucharest/Vienna: Severe storms that swept across parts of Europe following an intense heatwave have killed two people, one in Romania and another in Austria, the authorities said.
In Romania, heavy storms hit several areas, including the capital Bucharest overnight, flooding homes and basements and bringing down trees. Emergency services shared images of crews clearing fallen branches from vehicles while residents waded through waist-deep water in some locations.
In the village of Ganeasa, near Bucharest, a person was found dead inside a car after being struck by a falling tree during the storm.
In Austria, storms have caused widespread damage since Sunday, including landslides in the Tyrol region. Police said a man died on Tuesday in Upper Austria’s Perg district after being hit by a falling branch while riding a quad bike with his partner. The branch was weakened and brought down by strong winds.
The storms came shortly after a prolonged heatwave that broke temperature records across Europe. Experts say such extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change driven by greenhouse gas emissions.
