PARIS: French police have detained a couple in northern France after their 15-month-old twin daughters tragically died of suspected dehydration.
Preliminary investigative findings indicate that extreme heat conditions directly caused the sudden deaths of the two toddlers.
The parents discovered the twins unresponsive in their beds in the town of Beuvrages and immediately alerted emergency services.
Upon arrival, medical authorities also found the couple's four other children aged three, four, five, and six suffering from dehydration. The surviving siblings were quickly hospitalised, though officials confirmed their conditions are not life-threatening.
Local Mayor Ali Ben Yahia expressed profound grief publicly, stating the entire community is deeply shaken by the tragedy. He added that an official investigation is currently underway to establish the exact circumstances, noting the family was previously well-integrated locally.
The tragedy coincides with a record-breaking heatwave across France, which caused a massive spike in national fatalities last week. The extreme weather has disrupted daily life and led to several other heat-related child fatalities across the country.
