Riyadh: Yasser Al-Misehal, president of the Saudi Football Federation, resigned following the national team's group-stage exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, taking full responsibility for an unsuccessful campaign.
Al-Misehal apologised to supporters in a statement issued on Sunday, saying the team's performances had fallen short of expectations. Saudi Arabia finished bottom of Group H after drawing with Uruguay and Cape Verde and losing 4-0 to Spain.
Al-Misehal, who has led the federation since 2019, stated that stepping down was the proper decision, despite his term continuing until 2027. He also played an important part in Saudi Arabia's successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2034.
The departure comes as Saudi football faces increased scrutiny for recent moves, including a late coach replacement before the tournament, as the country attempts to rebuild ahead of hosting football's greatest event in eight years.
