Paris: As the record-breaking heatwave continues to put a burden on hospitals and emergency services, French authorities have temporarily banned the sale of alcohol for takeout and public drinking in Paris. According to officials, the limitations were put in place in response to a significant increase in heat-related illnesses and hospital admissions, as medical facilities were becoming close to full.

The injunction prohibits the consumption of alcohol in public areas, including streets, from Friday midday until early Saturday morning. On Saturday, the same restrictions will be in effect. Also, sales of alcoholic beverages for takeaway are prohibited in the evening and at night. Licensed pubs, cafés, and restaurants with appropriate permissions are excluded from the measures.

Authorities have cautioned that alcohol increases the risk of dehydration and heatstroke, making the severe temperatures even more deadly. The Paris fire department stated that emergency responses had increased to more than 2,500 in a single day, while inhabitants were advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and limit outdoor activity until temperatures dropped.
