US Senate Passes War Powers Resolution to Halt Iran War, Rebuking Trump

Washington: The US Senate passed a war powers resolution on Tuesday, ordering President Donald Trump to halt military strikes against Iran unless explicitly authorised by Congress, in a major bipartisan rebuke of the administration's handling of the dispute.
The resolution succeeded 50-48, with four Republican senators joining Democrats in support. It follows the House of Representatives' approval earlier this month, marking the first time since the 1973 War Powers Act that both chambers of Congress have enacted legislation authorising a president to halt ongoing hostilities.
The resolution expresses growing concern among lawmakers over presidential war powers and the unpopular struggle with Iran, despite being primarily symbolic and not requiring Trump's signature. The White House claimed that active hostilities had already stopped after a ceasefire was agreed in April, arguing that the measure had no legal impact.
Critics of the resolution cautioned that it might hinder ongoing diplomatic attempts with Iran, while supporters claimed the vote reaffirms Congress's constitutional authority over choices to wage war.
