Stockholm: The Church of Sweden has launched an investigation into Birgitta Ed, wife of Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, following complaints linked to her role in a spiritual foundation she leads.
The church said the inquiry will examine Ed's suitability to continue serving as a Lutheran priest after concerns were raised in media reports about the activities of the Fållöknastiftelsen foundation.
According to reports, the foundation recruited volunteers to raise funds and help renovate a manor house in exchange for networking opportunities and meetings at the prime minister's official residence. Ed is also alleged to have used church contacts to obtain donations and free services for the foundation.
The Church of Sweden said the investigation is expected to take several months. It could result in no action, a written reprimand, a probationary period, or the withdrawal of Ed's authorisation to serve as a priest.
The probe comes ahead of Sweden's parliamentary elections in September. The Church of Sweden, which has around 5.4 million members, formally separated from the Swedish state in 2000.
