Washington: According to U.S. Southern Command, one person was killed and two others survived an American military strike on a suspected drug-trafficking vessel in the eastern Pacific Ocean. This move is a part of Washington's ongoing efforts to block maritime narcotics trafficking in Latin America.
The military said that the boat was going on popular drug trafficking lines, even though officials did not formally provide evidence that it was carrying drugs. Video of the boat being struck and caught in flames is purportedly provided by the military.
The latest incident adds to a number of prior US strikes in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, which have claimed more than 200 lives since the campaign began in 2025. Legal experts and human rights groups have criticised the operations, citing their legality and a lack of openness in targeting decisions.
As the narcotics combat operation comes under review, the Pentagon's inspector general is looking at parts of the military's targeting procedures.
