Hanoi: Vietnamese authorities have reunited many stolen cats with their owners following a raid on an illicit cat-meat trade, according to local media. The rescue resulted in the saving of dozens of felines from the meat trade, many of which were identified by families who had reported their missing cats.

Officials believe the animals were stolen from houses and neighbourhoods before being transported to be killed. Animal welfare organisations assisted in caring for the rescued cats and returning them to their owners.

The story has sparked controversy in areas of Vietnam about pet theft and the cat meat trade, where activists have long called for better animal protection laws and tougher prosecution of illegal trafficking.

Authorities are conducting further investigations into people involved in the operation.
