Washington DC: The Trump administration has officially abandoned its highly controversial plan to establish a $1.8 billion ‘Anti-Weaponization Fund’ designed to compensate the president's political allies.
The sudden retreat came after a severe legislative revolt by Senate Republicans, paired with swift pushback in the federal court system. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed the decision, stating definitively that the Justice Department will not move forward with the program.
The fund originally emerged as part of a settlement resolving the president's private lawsuit against the IRS over leaked tax records. Under the deal, the administration sought to use $1.776 billion from the federal Judgment Fund to compensate conservative figures who claimed they were targets of unfair government investigations.
However, the initiative triggered an immediate crisis on Capitol Hill. Republican senators fiercely balked at the proposal, refusing to advance a priority immigration enforcement funding bill while the payout system loomed.
Lawmakers openly voiced concerns over public backlash and a lack of oversight, particularly regarding the potential for payouts to individuals convicted of taking part in the January 6 Capitol riot.
Concurrently, a federal judge in Virginia stepped in to temporarily freeze the fund. Despite the administration's concession, skeptical congressional Republicans are continuing to demand ironclad verification that the program has been completely dismantled.
