The United Arab Emirates has launched the National Initiative for Textile Circularity, known as “Naseej,” as part of its efforts to transform the textile sector into a sustainable circular economy and reduce textile waste across the country.
The initiative was launched under the directives of Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and is being implemented through a strategic partnership involving the National Projects Office, the UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism, the Emirates Foundation, and the Tadweer Group.
According to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Naseej will serve as a unified national platform that coordinates policy development, industry collaboration, research, and public engagement across the entire textile value chain.
The initiative addresses the growing challenge of textile waste in the UAE, where annual volumes are estimated at around 220,000 tonnes. Through a structured national framework, Naseej aims to strengthen collection and recycling systems, promote research and innovation, and encourage more responsible consumption practices aligned with circular economy principles.
Mariam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairperson of the Presidential Court for National Projects, said the initiative reflects the UAE’s commitment to sustainability and responsible resource management. She noted that Naseej seeks to drive positive behavioural change, encourage community participation and volunteering, and create long-term opportunities that support future generations.
Following its launch, the initiative will introduce a range of national programmes focused on sustainable textile practices, expanding collection and recycling infrastructure, and supporting research, pilot projects, and market development efforts. These measures are expected to help scale circular solutions and strengthen the sustainability of the UAE’s textile sector.
The launch of Naseej forms part of the UAE’s broader environmental and economic strategy to reduce waste, maximise resource efficiency, and build a more sustainable and resilient economy.
