Beirut: According to Lebanon's embassy in Washington, Hezbollah has accepted a plan for a mutual cease-fire with Israel that is supported by the United States. After weeks of escalating cross-border violence, this is a significant step toward reducing tensions.
According to the Lebanese presidency, the original agreement required Israel to desist from assaulting the southern suburbs of Beirut in exchange for Hezbollah ceasing its attacks on Israel. The proposal eventually aims to incorporate all of Lebanon.
The development follows U.S. diplomatic efforts led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as Israeli threats to escalate its strikes near Beirut. However, fighting resumed in portions of southern Lebanon, raising concerns about how quickly the proposed ceasefire will take hold on the ground.
Officials from both sides are expected to carefully monitor compliance in the coming days as international mediators push for a more comprehensive and long-term ceasefire agreement.
